Nitmiluk Is Proudly Part Of Jawoyn Association

When you visit Nitmiluk, you are sharing our vision for the future.

Nitmiluk National Park is owned by the Jawoyn people, made up of 17 clans with the common vision of sharing our country. The collective Jawoyn Association is a progressive, forward thinking business enterprise which provides employment and training for local people.

They have never wavered from the original Elder’s vision of bringing the Jawoyn people together as one nation, caring for country, and developing economic independence.

All proceeds that flow from Jawoyn businesses are re-invested into the community, for human services, employment, education and successful partnerships in tourism and land management.

We look forward to sharing our country with you.

Do you know how the Gorges developed?

Nitmiluk Gorge started forming about 120 million years ago when the Kombolgie Formation was above sea level.

Water followed the joints and faults in the sandstone, weathering and eroding stretches of straight gorges at angles to each other.

The Katherine River is believed to have established its present course in the last 20 million years.

The Horizontal bands you can see in the rocks were formed as the sediments were deposited, layer by layer. The river has eroded weak areas in the layers but the horizontal bands are the results of sedimentation, not weathering and erosion.

During the average wet season, about 1000mm of rain falls onto "stone country".
Where water collects, it slowly soaks into and through the sandstone.

Water from Dunlop Swamp, on top of the plateau, seeps through the porous sandstone. The water follows lines of weakness to form waterfalls and "raining rock" that you can see from the river.
